Why we need a Mediator

Dr. Reymond told us yesterday in a sermon (attributing it to Scotch Calvinist R. A. Finlayson, though I couldn't find such a quote in my short surfing) that Hell is eternity in the presence of God; Heaven is eternity in the presence of God with a Mediator.
