The Lord will come and not be slow

"David also saw God--and all His acts--as perfect. 'As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. . . . For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God?' (Ps. 18-30--31).

"God never does anything part-way. What He begins, He completes (Phil. 1:6). And what God does completely He also does flawlessly (Ps. 18:30).

"Imagine life governed by this truth! God works all things together for our good. God completes everything He starts. God never makes a mistake. What a great reason for praise! Beliveing this, we can rejoice confidently with Paul, ' Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? . . . No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us' (Rom. 8:35--37)!"

from Psalms of Promise by E. Calvin Beisner

These words that Cal shared with us last night caught my attention in a new way. What a comfort it is in working with people, all of us weak and sinful and slow to learn, that God does His work flawlessly. So I can keep praying for the young man who seems so stubborn, and for the young woman who has left her home in rebellion. I can comfort others who are terrified by the current political landscape. I can rest in the gospel in spite of my remaining sin. I can hope with confidence that at the end of the story, His providence will shine forth in brilliance. And all things will be very well. The Lord will come and not be slow.

The Lord will come and not be slow,
his footsteps cannot err;
before him righteousness shall go,
his royal harbinger.

Truth from the earth, like to a flower,
shall bud and blossom then;
and justice, from her heavenly bower,
look down on mortal men.

Surely to such as do him fear
salvation is at hand!
And glory shall ere long appear
to dwell within our land.

Rise, God, judge thou the earth in might,
this wicked earth redress;
for thou art he who shalt by right
the nations all possess.

The nations all whom thou hast made
shall come, and all shall frame
to bow them low before thee, Lord,
and glorify thy Name.

For great thou art, and wonders great
by thy strong hand are done:
thou in thy everlasting seat
remainest God alone.

As common, the tune and first line of this hymn plagued me for several days until I had opportunity to identify and look it up. The poem is by John Milton. Oh, to study John Milton with my kids as well as Johnson and Kirk and hundreds more! There are plenty of ancient writers to study, much truth passed down in myriad ways from the ags, and so little time in which to learn. May God make us diligent. And may His providence select and edit the best for us.
